This year Cruse Bereavement Care is marking our 60th anniversary. At our annual conference on the 4th and 5th July in Birmingham, we hosted a special Volunteer Awards ceremony to pay tribute to the dedication and outstanding contribution of our volunteers.

There were six categories, including, New Volunteer, Young Volunteer, Fundraising Volunteer, Management Volunteer, Volunteer of the Year and the President’s Award which was presented by our Life President, Dr Colin Murray Parkes.

New Volunteer - Mary Griffin

Mary was presented with the New Volunteer Award after joining Cruse in April 2018. She is a volunteer on the Cruse National Helpline and also a Champion for our More Than Words project. Mary also volunteers for our service in Kensington and Chelsea and provides face to face support.

Young Volunteer - Melissa Paphitis

Mel is a bereavement volunteer at Cruse Oxford. Mel is registered blind and has overcome many obstacles in order to complete her training and volunteer as a telephone volunteer for her local branch. She is a highly valued member of the team and always goes above and beyond.

Fundraising Volunteer - Deloris Smith

Deloris is one of the main fundraisers at our Cruse service in Wolverhampton and Dudley. Earlier in the year she organised a special charity ball where her daughter, Beverley Knight performed. The evening was a great success and raised a staggering £35,000! Deloris is also a bereavement volunteer and supports many clients each year. She was presented with her award by our Chair of Trustees, Pamela Rutter.

Management Volunteer - Bernard Krabbendam

Unfortunately Bernard was unable to attend the awards ceremony. Bernard has been the Treasurer at our service in Greenwich since 2005 and was nominated by the team for his commitment, patience and kindness and professionalism.

Volunteer of the Year - Anita Epstein

Anita was presented with the Volunteer of the Year Award. She joined Cruse Hertfordshire nearly four years ago and trained to be a bereavement volunteer. As well as seeing clients face to face, Anita helps on the local helpline and is the supervision lead for her area.  She is a highly valued member of the team.

President’s Award - Jennifer Redman

Jennifer was presented with the President’s Award by our Life President, Dr Colin Murray Parkes OBE. Jennifer has been a volunteer at our service in Brighton and Hove for over 30 years and has supported hundreds of clients during this time. Jennifer has given unstinted service to Cruse and is a very worthy winner of this special award.
