About us | Cruse Bereavement Care

0808 808 1677

We are the East Sussex branch of Cruse Bereavement Care, a UK charity established in 1959 which offers a nationwide network of confidential support and information to bereaved people of all ages, free of charge.

We understand that grief is a different process for everyone and our long experience tells us that bereaved people can find great comfort and relief in being able to express their feelings and talk through their distress with those who are trained to listen. We treat each bereaved person as an individual and empathise with their needs on that basis. Understanding grief and loss is essential to healing and future wellbeing.

However recent or long ago your bereavement was, you can approach Cruse at any time for practical information or confidential support. We have a support centre located in Eastbourne and another in the city of Brighton and Hove. As well as individual one-to-one support, we facilitate Drop-in services which you can attend without appointments.

We also use our expertise to offer training & consultancy for organisations. Find out more about our specialist training.

Confidential One-to-one Support

If one-to-one support is the best way of meeting your needs, a trained Bereavement Volunteer will visit you in your own home - or if you prefer you can be seen privately at one of our offices or at a suitable alternative venue. Each session is by appointment and usually lasts 60 minutes. You see the same Bereavement Volunteer every week for up to six weeks but are under no obligation to continue and can stop at any time. If you are under 16 your first meeting takes place with a parent or guardian present because parental consent is obligatory. After that, sessions can be on a one-to-one basis if you prefer.

Drop-in Services

We offer weekly Drop-in services in Brighton, Lewes and Eastbourne, where you can talk to someone privately as well as join a group facilitated by trained volunteers. No appointment is necessary for Drop-ins and this free service is completely confidential. Some people find groups invaluable; others use them as a bridge while they are waiting for one-to-one support.

You can attend our Drop-ins immediately; there is, however, a waiting list for one-to-one support. When you first contact us for this service, we will take your personal details over the phone and add you to our list of clients waiting. Although we do our best to give you our support as quickly as possible, there will be a wait of several weeks. Meanwhile, we can advise you on how to access more information about bereavement and the grief process.
