The ABC Foundation course for volunteers wishing to work with clients

Awareness in Bereavement Care (ABC) is the national Cruse foundation course for anybody wanting to work with our clients as a qualified bereavement volunteer. It consists of 12 core modules focusing on the impact of bereavement and the grieving process and how listening and responding skills can be used to support clients. The duration of the course is 45hours and it is scheduled over six whole days at weekends. Participants can have their work accredited by Ascentis if they wish.

Coventry and Warwickshire Area run an ABC course every year.

The course comprises 12 sessions (2 sessions a day) and prospective volunteers must attend at least 13 of these sessions.  The first 2 sessions are compulsory. They usually take place over a number of Saturdays and some Sundays.

Prospective attendees are interviewed prior to the course to discuss the work of Cruse and the course requirements. The course is not suitable for everyone, particularly if they have suffered a recent bereavement

Should there be spaces unfilled on the course we do offer these to suitable candidates who, are not intending to work for Cruse but, who feel the course would benefit their skills in the work place.

The charge is £400,00 for potential Cruse volunteers and £600.00 for non Cruse attendees. People receiving benefits or undergoing hardship, would be favourably considered for support if needed.

Following completion of the ABC course, applicants are invited to apply to be a bereavement volunteer with their local branch and will be asked to attend an interview.

For further information contact any of our branches who will pass on your details to the Training Co-Ordinator.  Alternatively email coventry@cruse.org.uk

Note:  You do not need to attend the ABC course if you would like to volunteer in other roles such as administration, fund raising.  Please see our Volunteer page for more information.

Continuing professional development

There are many different courses and training sessions available to volunteers when they are working with clients. Some sessions are compulsory (two one-day modules on 'Safeguarding' and 'Sudden and Traumatic Death') while others can be picked according to need and interest in order to further continuing professional development.

External Training

We offer one-day workshops for organisations whose personnel may encounter bereavement and bereaved people.

We can also offer short bespoke training sessions to other voluntary groups, schools, care workers and anyone who wants to learn more about bereavement. The courses are designed to give people skills in understanding and communicating with bereaved people.
