WOULD YOU LIKE TO BECOME A BEREAVEMENT SUPPORT VOLUNTEER?

We welcome volunteers to support us in our work. As well as people who are able to work with clients we need people who are able to assist us in an administrative capacity at either Area or Branch level. Any administrative expertise is welcomed, for example, finance, fundraising, publicity, secretarial or general committee support. So please contact us to see where your contribution would be most helpful on one of the numbers below. We would love to hear from you.

If you would prefer to work directly with clients no prior experience, training or academic ability is required to become a volunteer, our training covers everything you need to know. Being a volunteer means being there for someone at an intensely vulnerable and personal moment in their lives. It is real privilege to support someone at this time and have insight into this universal human struggle.

As well as the satisfaction of volunteering, Cruse will provide you with monthly supervision to support you in your work. If volunteers are on a student placement with us, supplementary individual supervision can be arranged. In addition, you will have access to our extensive experience and resources. You will also receive free on-going training in a variety of subjects and will have many opportunities to expand your role as a volunteer, such as courses in facilitating closed client groups or even becoming a supervisor of volunteers.

If you work with children you may wish to take our course in working with children and young adults and thereby take on clients younger than 16 years old.

As Cruse Coventry and Warwickshire area spans three branches, depending on the branch that you become affiliated to we have much to offer volunteers such as one to one work with clients, general and specialised closed client groups, as well as monthly open client groups where clients on the waiting list are invited to come along and meet others who have been bereaved. Here you will gain experience in facilitating small groups of 2-4 clients for 30 minutes as the large group of clients is divided up into smaller ones.

We are one of a few areas that has been chosen in a pilot scheme to set up closed client groups with the Samaritans for those bereaved through suicide. We give volunteers free training to become a facilitator for this special new service which is due to start in 2015.

We have also recently set up telephoning counselling with training for those who are happy to help people through this medium, and hope to also set up training for helping clients through the aid of the internet. These are exciting new ways of helping clients.

What we ask from you as a volunteer is commitment. We ask that you commit to a few hours a month either in an administrative role or helping clients and attending on-going training in the form of bereavement volunteer meetings depending on the branch that you work with.

In order to become a bereavement volunteer working with clients you must have completed the ABC (Awareness in Bereavement Care) course. Details of this course can be found on the training page.
