Sir Tony Hawkhead has been elected as the new Chair of Trustees at the UK’s largest bereavement charity, Cruse Bereavement Care.

Tony was elected into the position at the bereavement charity’s AGM on Tuesday 10th December 2019. He replaces Pamela Rutter who has been a volunteer for Cruse for 28 year and Chair of Trustees since 2018.

Sir Tony Hawkhead has held several high profile Chief Executive posts, including his most recent role at Action for Children. He is currently the Independent Vice Chair for the Birmingham and Solihull Clinical Commissioning Group and has held non-executive positions with the UK National Advisory Board on Social Investment and the Department of Environment, Food and Rural Affairs.

Sir Tony Hawkhead said: “I am delighted to be the new chair of this extraordinary charity. I have seen first-hand the exceptional support Cruse’s network of bereavement volunteers give and I am very thankful they were there for me and my family when my son, James died in 1991.

“Cruse has ambitious plans for the next few years and I am looking forward to working with the charity to help extend its services to reach more bereaved people.”

Steven Wibberley, Chief Executive of Cruse Bereavement Care, said: “I am delighted to welcome Sir Tony Hawkhead as the newly appointed Chair of Trustees at Cruse. Tony brings a wealth of experience to our Trustee team and I am looking forward to working with him.”
