Cruse Bereavement care provides emotional support to people who have been affected by a death. Our services are free and confidential, and open to all, no matter when a death occurred. This section provides answers to frequently asked questions about referring clients to Cruse services. If you work for a school, please click here to access our schools pages. Q. How do I refer my client?

A. Cruse services are self-referral. Clients can refer themselves to Cruse by contacting their local Cruse service. A list of all Cruse services can be found on our website here. Clients can also call our national helpline, which offers emotional support and will be able to provide the number of the nearest Cruse service.

Q. What happens when a client contacts their local Cruse?

A. Clients can contact their local service by phone or email. Some services will have a staffed telephone line, whilst others run a 24 hour voicemail service. Clients will need to leave a message with their name, contact details, and a good time to return the call. We aim to respond to all messages within two working days.

Q. I can’t find my local Cruse on the website

A. If there is no local Cruse in your area, please call our helpline on 08444779400 as we may know of alternative services.

Q. Can I refer a client to a neighbouring service?

A. The way Cruse services are funded means that they are often unable to see clients who live out of their area. You may wish to contact the service directly if you are unsure if your client lives in the catchment area. Contact details for all services can be found on the website here.

Q. Does Cruse work with children / families?

A. Yes. Most Cruse services have volunteers specialising in this kind of support. Contact your local service for details. There is more information about supporting bereaved children and young people on our website here.

Q. I work with clients with severe and enduring mental health issues. Can Cruse help?

A. Cruse services are provided by carefully trained volunteers, specialising in bereavement support. Our volunteers all receive clinical supervision and ongoing professional development, but they do not have psychiatric or psychological training. Please consider the level of support your client needs, and discuss this with your local Cruse service if you are unsure.

Q. I work with clients with learning disabilities. Can Cruse help?

A. Cruse services are provided by carefully trained volunteers, specialising in bereavement support. Please contact your local Cruse to discuss your client’s support needs.
