Bereavement Support in Surrey North Area

It usually helps to talk but not everyone has somebody they can talk to in confidence. Our bereavement service is provided by experienced volunteers who receive full training. Our training is accredited by Ascentis and is recognised and quality checked by the National Counselling Society.

Our Area

We cover the northern Surrey boroughs of Spelthorne, Elmbridge, Woking and Runnymede.  If you do not live in any of these boroughs please search for your local Cruse Area Office on our main website.

Our Services

We currently offer the following confidential services free of charge:

  • One-to-one bereavement support. One of our volunteers will visit you in your home or at one of our designated meeting places to provide personalised support.
  • Berevement support groups. We bring together small groups of people for them to meet and get support from each other and our facilitators.
  • Telephone support. This is similar to one-to-one support (a fixed-length regular support session) but conducted over the phone.
  • Specialist support for children and young people which can take place either at home or at school.
  • Information, literature and online support. We can provide literature and provide information on online resources to help people to understand the causes and effects of grief.  There is a list of some of these resources further down this page. We can also provide pre-bereavement support which you can access via our contact line.
  • Other support options (email support, disaster support, field of conflict support, etc.) are available from our central service.

If you are supporting or caring for someone bereaved by death, we are also able to provide help, information education and publications to assist you.

How To Get Help

  • Please call our support line on 01932 571177 and leave a message.
  • A trained volunteer will get back to you within 24 hours to discuss your circumstances with you and explore support options.
  • We will send you literature to explain what we offer and other supporting material.
  • We will hold an initial assessment session as soon as possible after contact.
  • After assessment a bereavement volunteer will contact you to arrange further support sessions and options.
  • We regret we cannot arrange support via email as we will need to discuss your case with you.
  • Also we do not accept third party referrals from friends, family or healthcare professionals. When we have done this in the past, we have sometimes found the person concerned does not want our support and we have only added to their distress.

Children and Young Adults

We provide special support to meet the particular needs of children and young adults.  Please contact our normal helpline number for more information.

Hope Again is a Cruse website designed to help children and young adults and there is also a young people's Helpline on 0808 808 1677.  Specialist e-mail support is also available.

Friends Of Cruse

Sometimes, through formal contact with others who have shared the experience of bereavement, new and lasting friendships develop and this informal support network becomes a powerful force for good.  Friends Of Cruse provides a varied and interesting programme of speakers, outings and various other arranged social activities for people who have finished their support sessions but wish to remain engaged with the charity and meet others who have had similar experiences in a social environment.

Venues and activities vary monthly. Please email Betty Greenwood (who runs the Friendship Group) if you are interested in joining the group.
