Bookkeeper Responsibilities for Cruse Bereavement Care Thames Valley Berkshire (TVB)

Job brief

We are looking for a skilled Bookkeeper to work on a voluntary basis for 3-5 hours a week to maintain our financial records, including purchases, invoices, receipts, volunteer expenses and payments to utilities.

Bookkeeper job duties include working closely with the Area Treasurer to create and analyze financial reports and ensure legal requirements compliance, process accounts payable and receivable and manage invoices, donations, grants, VAT and gift aid payments.

Ultimately, the Bookkeeper’s responsibilities are to accurately record all day-to-day financial transactions of our charity’s Branch and report to the Area Management Committee quarterly and the Branch Client Services Committee monthly.

The Bookkeeper would be responsible to the Area Treasurer. If accepted as a volunteer, you will be required to satisfactorily pass a Disclosure and Barring Scheme check (formerly a CRB check). Responsibilities

  • Recording day to day financial transactions including recording cash receipts and making bank deposits, by attending the Branch Office in Bracknell weekly and completing the posting process
  • Verifying that transactions are recorded in the correct manner
  • Bringing the books to the trial balance stage
  • Reconciling the bank account at  intervals with the Area Treasurer, as requested
  • Ensuring that all expenditure, including volunteers’ expenses, is authorised correctly before payment
  • Entering data, maintaining records and financial statements
  • Processing accounts receivable/payable in a timely manner
  • Calculating variances from the budget and reporting significant issues to management
  • Issuing invoices as requested
  • Purchasing supplies and equipment as authorised by management
  • Handling and keeping a record of donations and grants

Requirements

  •      Proven bookkeeping experience
  • Able to respect and maintain confidentiality
  • Solid understanding of basic bookkeeping and accounting payable/receivable principles
  • Proven ability to calculate, post and manage accounting figures and financial records
  • Data entry skills along with a knack for numbers
  • Hands-on experience with spreadsheets and Excel.
  • Proficiency in English and in MS Office
  • High degree of accuracy and attention to detail

We can offer you support and car parking charges. We are a small Branch of the national charity Cruse Bereavement Care with not a huge amount of funding but we are a friendly team of volunteers who would welcome someone to look after our finances.

Volunteer administration job for Cruse Bereavement Care Thames Valley Berkshire (TVB)

Cruse Bereavement Care Thames Valley Berkshire require a volunteer to assist with some administrative jobs in their Office for a regular 3-4 hours a week and sometimes more during the grant application season from September to November or when TVB are running a training course. Expenses would be paid. Could also do some work from home.

Main responsibilities would include:

  • Opening post and distributing it to the relevant people
  • Checking emails
  • Answering messages on the administration phone line
  • Keeping updated spreadsheets of donors, Friends of Cruse and library books
  • Doing all the administration for training eg arranging interviews and applying for references
  • Assisting with writing small bids for local grants
  • Writing thank you letters to donors
  • Collating information from service evaluation sheets
  • Keeping a diary – booking rooms for meetings etc.
  • Monitoring office supplies and leaflets and reordering as necessary

If you wish to work from home for some of the time then you should have good email/internet access and use of a telephone there.

Skills needed:

Proficiency in English, in MS Office and data input skills  

We are looking for a person who has good organisational and communication skills, attention to detail and likes to follow processes and get things done!
Somebody who is quite happy to work on their own but also as part of a team.
Has great communication and good IT skills

Our office is on the ground floor with disability access; we are in the same building as Involve community so there are always people around from 9am to 5pm.

Bereavement Volunteers

Anyone can apply to be a Bereavement Volunteer for Cruse. You do not need any previous experience but you do need to care about bereaved people and have time to offer. The training consists of 3 days Foundation course and a 2 or 3 day elective module and all the days must be attended. If training is not available in Thames Valley Berkshire at a particular time training may be provided by a nearby Cruse Area.
