Protect Yourself from Energy Scams
Some people pretend to offer help with energy bills, grants, or home improvements when they are actually trying to scam you.
What Is an Energy Scam?
Energy scams often involve people pretending to be:
- An energy supplier
- A government or council scheme
- Energy Saving Trust or Ofgem
- An installer offering “free” or “funded” energy upgrades
They may contact you by phone, text, email, social media, or by knocking on your door.
Common Warning Signs
Be cautious if someone:
- Contacts you without you asking
- Pressures you to act quickly or immediately
- Says offers or funding are “about to expire”
- Asks for bank details, passwords, or PINs
- Requests payment to access a grant
- Refuses to give information in writing
- Tells you not to check with anyone else
If it feels rushed, confusing, or stressful, stop and take a step back.
Important Things to Know
- Genuine grants and schemes do not require upfront fees
- The Warm Home Discount is never offered by text message
- It is always okay to say no, hang up, or close the door
If Someone Contacts You Unexpectedly
By phone, text, or email:
- Do not click links or reply
- Do not share personal or bank details
- Hang up or delete the message
- You can report scam texts by forwarding them to your provider on 7726 (free service)
At your door
- Do not let anyone in unless you are expecting them
- Ask for ID and take time to check it
- If unsure, close the door and seek advice
- Legitimate organisations will respect this.
What To Do If You Are Unsure
- Stop the conversation
- Don’t share any information
- Check independently using trusted contact details
- Speak to a local advice service or your energy supplier using the number on your bill
